Professor of Orthopaedic & Accident Surgery, Queens Medical Centre & the University of Nottingham


Professor W Angus Wallace has held a number of senior appointments in Surgery, Shoulder Surgery, Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Surgery. He was appointed Chairman of the National Osteoporosis Society (1996-8), Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1997-2000), Founder Member and President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (2001-3) and is currently on the Executive Committee of the International Board of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (1992-2019). He was Chair of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association (1997-9), Chair of the National Sports Medicine Institute (1999-2003), created the MSc Course in Sports Medicine in Nottingham with Professor Idris Williams in 1992 and is currently on the Council of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (2006-2014). He has been Chair of the Examinations Board for Trauma and Orthopaedics for UK & Ireland (2003-6) and Chair of the Training Board (SAC) for Trauma and Orthopaedics for UK & Ireland (2008-2010). He was appointed President of the 11th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery – ICSES in September 2010.

Professor Wallace has had a special interest in Health Informatics, establishing the Faculty of Health Informatics at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998 and developing a Masters Degree Course in Health Informatics with the University of Bath. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Health Informatics from 2000 to 2005 during which he was one of the 4 members of the team that launched the Surgical eLogbook (with Andrew Lamb, Lester Sher and Mike Reed). He has remained active in informatics as a member of the National Clinical Reference Panel (2006 to date) and the Royal College of Physicians “Documentation & Generic Records Standards (CDGRS)” Steering Group.

Clinically he is one of the most experienced Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons in the UK with a practice which involves over 400 operations per year including over 100 shoulder replacements. He has been using PROMs routinely in his clinical practice since 1998 for assessing the treatment outcomes for his shoulder and elbow patients and, in 2010 developed the Nottingham Clavicle Score for patients with collar bone, acromio-clavicular and sterno-clavicular problems. The Nottingham Clavicle Score was validated in 2012.
